A critical ingredient in the experience of exceptional cuisine is the location of its enjoyment.

The Grill Room

When it comes to the legends associated with The Oyster Box, one of its finest gems is the celebrated Grill Room Restaurant. Another is Hendry Pakiri, who has worked at the hotel for 50 years and still oversees this elegant dining room as Maître ‘d. With a history stretching back almost 60 years, The Grill Room has always been the epitome of style and fine dining in Durban.

Under the leadership of executive chef, Kevin Joseph, the menu is an inspired combination of enduringly popular dishes, created by Bea Tollman, president and founder of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, Signature Dishes and contemporary new creations garnered from around the world.

The Ocean Terrace

The beautiful Ocean Terrace overlooking the rolling Indian Ocean is perfect for family and more casual dining.

With authentic Tandoori and pizza ovens to prepare some of your favourite dishes with exceptional taste and aroma, this enchanting restaurant offers mouthwatering Indian cuisine, a full English breakfast buffet, as well as an a la carte menu for lunch and dinner.

The Ocean Terrace is also the perfect backdrop for a relaxed drink, elegantly enhanced by a nearby rim flow pool.

The Palm Court

Artistically inspired by The Oyster Box original colonial architecture, The Palm Court Restaurant is exquisitely set in a spacious, airy open courtyard soaked in warm sunlight with lush palms reaching up to the skies to touch breathtaking chandeliers above.

This charming venue, a favourite meeting spots of guests, is perfect for casual dining, sumptuous traditional afternoon teas and simply catching up with friends over cocktails.

The Oyster Bar

Reflecting the soft blues of the Ocean, with rhythmically swaying rattan fans, the casual and stylish Oyster Bar is the hub of the hotel.

For pre-dinner drinks or sundowners, sit back and relax with a glass of chilled Champagne and freshly harvested oysters from the hotel’s own oyster beds and a delicious array of cocktails.

The Oyster Bar is also a popular spot for informal meetings or casual get-togethers, as guests enjoy a selection of light snack meals, a pot of freshly brewed coffee or tea and freshly baked scones.

A fascinating attraction for visitors, the Chef’s Table in the wine cellar, situated underground and viewed through a glass ceiling, is ideal for private dinners, corporate functions and unique celebrations, for up to 10 guests.

With views over the pool and terrace, the iconic lighthouse and the Indian Ocean, The Oyster Bar provides, the perfect respite from the activity of the working day.

The Lighthouse Bar

With the most breathtaking panoramic views along the Umhlanga beach and out to sea there can be no better place than the Lighthouse Bar for unwinding with friends or family.

The famous Umhlanga lighthouse is visible from everywhere within The Lighthouse Bar. Whether you sit inside at the long bar, in one of the cosy conversation areas, or outside on the magnificent terrace, with 180 degree views of the coastline, this is undoubtedly the hottest rendevouz spot in KwaZulu-Natal for spectacular sunsets and sundowners.

The Lighthouse Bar, with its dark wood and detail in leather, crimson and gold, makes it a favourite with locals and visitors.

It's the number one stop for live music, tantalising snacks and our own signature Umhlanga Schling cocktail (photo above), which uses ingredients, particular to Durban, such as cane sugar and cane spirit. It's also become a popular meeting place for sports lovers on match days, to take in a game of soccer, cricket or rugby on the large plasma screens, whilst enjoying the company of friends.

The Chukka Bar

Situated in the same spot it has occupied for over 50 years, this authentic old world bar is brimming over with charm, character and memories.

Filled with Polo memorabilia, an intimate bar and comfortable conversation area, the Chukka Bar has its own entrance and is The Oyster Box’s only smoking venue.

A firm favourite with local residents, many of whom are long-standing patrons of the Oyster Box, it’s the place where over the years, many a business deal, horse race or polo match has been discussed and dissected and where today, guests can enjoy an excellent selection of Whiskey’s and Beers in comfort.

Our extensive range of Cigars is popular with patrons looking to end their evening with a great Whiskey and cigar. The convivial and intimate ambience of the Chukka Bar, as well as the personal and attentive service of the experienced and knowledgeable barman, is an experience in itself.
